Saskia Bretag

CHARACTER DESIGN by Saskia Bretag is a book filled with character concepts for 7 different characters. They are based on gods of different mythologies: Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Azthecan and the mythology of the Inca. The characters got designed for a video game concept which is a PvP and Arena game.

Saskia Bretag

Hey, I am an Illustrator and was born in Berlin.

I am 22 years old and drawing was always important for me. The same counts for Videogames. With both I'm able to relax. So I was really excited about combining my two interests for my Bachelorproject.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

It's not that easy to have a look that far ahead. But I hope to work as a concept artist, specialized in prop design and creature design.

What is a good design for you?

I think especially in the field of concept design the principle "Form follows Function" is a good start. But also clarity is quite important.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

Honestly it was the complete Bachelor and I would even say that the project was more exhausting then the Thesis because for me it was always hard to be happy and proud with what I created.

Who or what inspires you?

Basically I am always getting inspired when I am seeing concept art of other artists. The same counts for video game art and nature.

How do you approach a new project?

Normally I first start to plan and to think about the topic given to me, then research is following. But sometimes I just start to draw and let my inspiration and ideas take over. Because basically you can always recycle a good sketch.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

Just never miss a good opportunity to learn something new and sketch it down. Go out and get your inspiration from everywhere, what you see. But don't forget to relax and take good care of yourself.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

Yes! I have gotten way more confident also in terms of my art. I am way more proud on my art now.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

I first wanted to choose Game Design, but I decided quickly for Illustration because I thought a study which gives me a foundation is never wrong.

What are you not going to miss in your studies?

I am definitely not going to miss the stress. I mean sometimes I worked the nights through. Especially during my bachelor. But I guess a stressy day about hitting the deadlines in this carrier field will never end.

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

I will just feel so relieved. So I will be very happy and probably not going to stop smiling. But most important: Before the next chapter of my life starts I will relax.

Say hi!
