Constants and Variables - the Anatomy of Combat Design in Video Games

Nikolas Joshua Klein

For his project, Nikolas Joshua Klein did extensive research on combat systems for third-person combat-focused action adventure video games in order to design and produce a stand-alone combat system. The main focus of the combat system is to convey a grounded feeling. The project was created inside the Unreal Engine 4, making use of the Blueprints visual scripting system.

I am a passionate game designer with a technical background. I love working on awesome projects and to bring in my passion and experience to make it the best product it could ever be. And I am a huge nerd over Star Wars – I guess that's a free bonus fact for you!

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

You know, the #1 spot on my bucket list is to work on a Star Wars game, so...who knows! Maybe as a creative director!

What is a good design for you?

Good design is design that is made for everybody. If a game was made only for one core audience, nobody else would enjoy it. A design should be as accessible as possible, that's what makes it good for me.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

Dealing with critical feedback on something that is dear to your heart. But in the end, feedback is against the feature, not against you.

Who or what inspires you?

What inspires me most is pure passion, and people that bring this passion to work every day.

How do you approach a new project?

Dream big, cut down features along the way. This is the way!

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

Be curious! If you encapsulate yourself in your preferred field from the beginning, you are missing out on a lot of great things you could learn from other disciplines in your study program.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

I hope so! I would say that I am a whole lot more open to critical feedback, as well as more proficient, and knowledgeable in my skillset.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

I was passionate, but naive. I wanted to learn the craft and get more experience in order to lose this naivety!

What are you not going to miss in your studies?

Working a ton of overtime over the weekend right before a final submission. Looking forward to that sweet 9 to 5, baby!

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

Sleep, a lot of sleep. Oh and maybe doing some catch-up on some games and movies.

Say hi!
