North Korean Propaganda Poster

Donghoon Kang

For NORTH KOREAN PROPAGANDA POSTERS, Donghoon Kang has created posters, combining the typical style of a North Korean propaganda poster with the painful and gloomy stories of North Korean defectors.
The project is intended to sympathize the pain of thgose North Koreans, that are attempting to escape from the country or are already staying illegally in other countries.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

I would like to open a gallery cafe to display and sell my works with the sweet smell of coffee. :)

What is a good design for you?

A good design is a harmonious combination of colour, emotion and a strong message for audiences.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

It seems that my final project was the most challenge during my course. For the first time, I made a work of someone else's story rather than my own. Since it was someone else's story, I had to be more careful and serious than when I was dealing with my own story.

Who or what inspires you?

Julia Beutling. I did an internship for her, and she inspired me a lot. She taught me a lot, and her illustrations are warm and beautiful.

How do you approach a new project?

First of all, I look at the empty drawing paper and start drawing anything I come up with. After that I choose the one that looks the best.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

I hope that you do not just focus on one thing. but try many things and experiences as much as possible.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

I have tried digital drawing for the first time during my studies, and I found that this is what I want to do. Although I am still experimenting with various tools and styles, I believe I have found my own colour. The university has also given me an opportunity to see other student's works, where I am often surprised by their different perspective and diversed approach. This also allowed me to see the drawing with a open mind.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

I started the program, thinking that I wanted to study industrial design. While creating my portfolio, I fell in love with illustration and creative work. It did not take long until I decided to delve into my interest and study it.

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

Maybe I'll have a delicious dinner. and I have to call my family in Korea. :)

Say hi!
