Redefining Waste

Sophia Gregg Arlt

SCRAPS is a mobile application that tackles the problem of major waste pollution on our planet. The thesis examines how design can influence behaviours and attitudes towards waste in order to create positive change. The project addresses the issue of not knowing what to do with trash or how to contribute to the fight against climate change. This app will help mend the disconnect humans have towards the impact trash has on nature by raising consciousness and connecting creatives and sustainably conscious individuals. Together, users exchange materials and ideas, as well as uploading upcycled projects. Sophia envisions SCRAPS to be available as a mobile app in stores, and further functioning as a social media platform. With this, environmental topics will enter the forefront of people's interactions with each other in the future.

I am a Communication Designer based in Berlin, Germany. I am passionate about sustainability and environmental topics. I believe design can be a huge driving force for behavioural and societal change and hope to use my design skills to do just that in the future.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

In 20 years, I see myself living in my 20th-or-so country as a founder of a successful carbon-negative sustainable company that has influenced massive change in the consumerist society or working as the sustainable officer in a big company.

What is a good design for you?

In my opinion, the most important thing is that it communicates something meaningful, helpful or useful. A good design should leave the person better off or with more knowledge than they had before they encountered it.

Who or what inspires you?

My mom :)

How do you approach a new project?

I do a lot of scrolling on Pinterest and Google for inspiration. Then I do tons of sketches, brainstorms, mind maps, just a big brain dump. After that I start with the concepts on the Adobe programmes.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

DO AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN. I had the most fun when I was helping with the AStA or volunteering for all the extra-curricular things. I learned the most both about design and how to manage my life and schedule through my side jobs and working for the university's marketing department where I could apply what I was learning. Remember you may not have THIS much time to develop yourself and your own skills again, so make the most of it :) Take advantage of all the opportunities the UE gives you and get to know your professors.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

Could I have changed more is the better question! I think my interests changed a lot, my priorities, mentality towards life, my coping mechanisms, my mental health. Just the general stuff you learn in your late teens and 20s, I guess!

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

I guess I kind of picked it randomly. I had been editing some videos the summer before and attended a course on how to learn the Adobe programmes and this seemed like it would be fun. And it was!

What are you not going to miss in your studies?

Having to travel for almost an hour to get to the university.

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

It's my friend's birthday, so we will meet up and celebrate another year of her life and the end of a chapter in mine!

Say hi!
