Reality 2.0

Moritz Becker

Moritz Becker’s work REALITY 2.0 showcases the power of escapism through video games via illustrated posters of players with their avatars. Everyone has their own methods to deal with the stress and pressure of everyday life and finds ways to replace negative emotions with positive experiences. Video games in particular provide an unique opportunity to discover fictional worlds and characters or to experience real-world issues in a new and immersive manner. The portrayed avatars and characters are linked with the portraits of the gamers to show how a person’s digital environment impacts their consciousness. As a result, reality merges with the experienced content of the video game.

Moritz Becker

Hey, my name is Moritz Becker, i am currently 25 years old and was born in Wuppertal. Even though I developed my passion for art and design rather late in my life, somewhere around the age of 18-19, it has become one of my biggest motivations for pursuing what I love and what I want to do with my life since then. After having finished a portfolio and design course in Leipzig, I decided to move and study Illustration in Berlin. I'd consider myself a pretty funny and open-minded dude that takes inspiration from a lot of things in life, be they own motivational factors like drawing, design, gaming and movies or hearing and reading about interesting topics, passions and stories of other people and reflect upon them.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

Not a big fan of those kinds of questions. Most importantly I want to be happy with where I am in life and who I am but still having an urge to do and be better. But it'd be great if I would make a good living by drawing the stuff I love!

What is a good design for you?

Good design should always be creative and fulfilling its purpose or function in a broad sense. Having just one of those would still be lacking a good design in my eyes.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

Writing my bachelor thesis. Even though it was fun and interesting, that thing just made me lose my mind from time to time....who am I kidding, almost every damn day.

Who or what inspires you?

I take a lot of inspiration from my passions like gaming and movies where storytelling, a strong and appealing image, unique characters and an interesting narrative are of major importance. Furthermore, I do enjoy the strange and somewhat absurd things that happen in everyday life.

How do you approach a new project?

That is still one of my biggest struggles as I am very unsure of what I want each new project to look like, concerning style and technique. Do the homework, look for reference and inspiration, set a good base and composition.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

Find things and techniques that inspire and motivate you and set a work flow around them.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

Nope, wouldn't say so.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

Because I realised that I liked drawing cool stuff and would love to spend my time and efforts towards that.

What are you not going to miss in your studies?

Spending money on it!

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

We'll see, we'll see ...

Say hi!
