Urashima Taro

Lisa Philipp

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

Balancing my studies with my part time job and quality time for myself and friends. It's rather challenging to take breaks, but they are extremely important. For every hour you take a break, you get 2 hours worth of work done in the next half hour. But it's difficult nonetheless.

Who or what inspires you?

My friends, family, Japanese culture, and maybe a few filmmakers: Hayao Miyazaki, Robert Williams, and Glen Keane.

How do you approach a new project?

Optimism, then despair. Rinse and repeat for about 10,000 times until it's done, then start worrying about the next project. No, but seriously, it's hard for me to balance between optimism and realism sometimes. But depending on the project, I usally start with a foggy to clear vision in my head and either write a concept or just start right away (like with this project). Then I make a plan for myself, including rough timeframes for when a bigger milestone has to be finished. Otherwise I set smaller goals throughout the week and adjust when needed.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

Don't.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

I've learned quite alot. I remember when I started I didn't even know AfterEffects existed. Now I'm juggling that in addition to Photoshop, Premiere, Audition, InDesign, Illustrator, Procreate, and other programs. I've also gained a lot more confidence which I would consider the most important aspect of any field of study, especially art.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life after finishing school, other than “something with media”. When I found out about this program, it was advertised to me as “the program for people who don't know what to do with their life yet, other than something with media”. So yeah... I might have a slightly better idea of what to do with my life now.

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

... Corona said no.

Say hi!

Lol, they didn't even manage to upload my actual project xD Sorry for that. They didn't really tell us if or how we should upload our projects. Mine would've been to big anyways.
