"Ein Sommernachtsalptraum" ("A midsummer night's nightmare")

(German) EIN SOMMERNACHTSALPTRAUM handelt in erster Linie von den Problemen der ersten großen Liebe, denen sich die Protagonistin, Ophelia, stellen muss. Es kommen jedoch auch Intrigen, Familiendramen und satanische Rituale in der Geschichte vor. Melina Sabalioti beschreibt den Zeichenstil als eine „chaotische Kombination aus girly und Punk.“ Eine weibliche Protagonistin sollte mehr können, als als Objekt der Begierde zu dienen und/oder – wie in Ophelias Fall im Shakespeare-Klassiker „Hamlet“, dann auch noch zu ertrinken, weil sie sich vor Liebeskummer umbringt. Das ist sowas von 1609! Es wird Zeit, einige alte Geschichten umzuschreiben. (English) A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S NIGHTMARE primarily focus on the problems of first love that the protagonist, Ophelia, has to face – but there are also intrigues, family dramas, and satanic rituals involved. Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
Ich sehe mein 46-jähriges Ich in einem gemütlichen Landhaus, verheiratet mit meiner großen Liebe Johannes. Wir besitzen viele Kaninchen. Ich bin Schriftstellerin und Illustratorin, er ist Ägyptologe – unsere Wände zieren Fotos unserer Abenteuer und Reisen. I see my 46 year old self in a cozy country house, married to my love Johannes. We own lots of rabbits. I am a writer and illustrator, he is an egyptologist – our walls show photographs of our adventures and journeys.
What is a good design for you?
Ein gutes Design ist meiner Meinung nach ein ehrliches Design, das von Herzen kommt. A good design is in my opinion an honest design that comes from the heart.
What was the most challenging experience during your studies?
... zu lernen, wie man räumlich zeichnet ... Ich denke, ich werde wohl niemals Architektin. Das ist auch besser so! ...to learn how to draw spatially ... I think I will never going to make it as an architect. That's only for the best!
Who or what inspires you?
Poesie, Kaninchen, Musik (Songtexte), die Natur, klassische Kunst (zum Beispiel von Sandro Botticelli oder Michelangelo), Religion (insbesondere das Christentum), (satanische) Kulte, Großstadt-Ghettos, alles was mit Lana del Rey zu tun hat, Voodoo, (schwarze) Magie, (griechische) Mythologie (aber auch persische), Punk, Romane von Stephen King, hoffnungslose und tragische Charaktere. // Poetry, rabbits, music (song lyrics), nature, classic art (for example by like Sandro Botticelli or Michelangelo), religion (especially christianity), (satanic) cults, urban ghettos, everything that has to do with Lana del Rey, voodoo, (black) magic, (Greek) mythology (but also Persian), punk, novels by Stephen King, hopeless and tragic characters.
How do you approach a new project?
Wenn es um ein neues Comicprojekt geht, erstelle ich zuerst eine Mind-Map zu dem Thema, das ich ausgewählt habe, mache ein paar Skizzen (das allererste Charakter-Design), manchmal schreibe ich ein kurzes Skript und beginne dann mit dem Storyboard. Wenn es fertig ist, beginne ich mit dem „Offiziellen“, dem Reinzeichnen des Comics. When it comes to a comic: I create a mind map about the topic I chose, I make a few sketches (the very first character design), sometimes I write a short script, then I start with the storyboard. When this is finished, I begin to draw the official comic.
What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?
Es gibt kein richtig oder falsch, wenn es um Kreativität geht. Sei einfach du selbst, gib nicht vor, jemand anderes zu sein, um andere zu beeindrucken. Bleib deinem individuellen Stil und deinen Werten treu! There is no right or wrong when it comes to creativity. Just be yourself, don't pretend to be somebody else to impress others. Be loyal to your individual style and your values!
Have you changed during your studies? How?
Ja, ich habe gelernt, Verantwortung für mich und andere zu übernehmen. Außerdem habe ich UNGLAUBLICHE Menschen getroffen, die mein Leben bereichert haben und das Handwerk/die Technik des professionellen Zeichnens gelernt – wofür ich sehr dankbar bin. Yes, I've learned to take responsibility for myself and others. Besides that, I've met INCREDIBLE people that have enriched my life and I learned the craft/the technique of drawing professionally – which I am very grateful for.
Why did you choose to study in your programme?
Ich habe mich dazu entschieden, Illustration zu studieren, um den Geschichten, die ich mir ausdenke und den Charakteren, die darin vorkommen, ein überzeugendes und ästhetisches Aussehen zu verleihen. I chose to study illustration to be able to give the stories that I tell and the characters in it a convincing and aesthetic look.
What are you not going to miss in your studies?
Es gibt wahrscheinlich nichts, was ich nicht vermisse werde, abgesehen von den Gebühren. Ansonsten werde alles andere vermissen – die vertraute, familiäre Atmosphäre, den Geruch von Acrylfarbe im Studio, den Unterricht, sogar die Hausaufgaben und natürlich die Menschen, die Leben in dieses Gebäude gebracht haben und wieder bringen werden. There is probably nothing I am not going to miss, except the fees. I think I am going to miss everything besides that – the familiar atmosphere, the smell of acrylic colours in the studio, the classes, even the homework and of course the people who brought life into this building.
How are you going to celebrate your graduation?
