Isabel de Urquia Lara's subNOTE is a project exploring graphic notation for Moog's Subharmonicon synthesizer. Analog modular synthesizers have been around since the 1960s and there is still no efficient way of notating compositions and performances for them. Their unique possibilities as musical instruments have always rendered standard musical notation insufficient. subNOTE proposes a hands-on graphic solution consisting of a stencil and a set of instructions based on codes, colors, and visuals.
As a test, the three-part composition Pilot was created and interpreted by users with no previous experience with the instrument.
