Queer Everyday - Comic Collection of Queer Joy

Viktoria Velcheva

Viktoria Velcheva’s comic collection QUEER EVERYDAY presents the everyday joy queer people experience. It examines the importance of those happy moments and is a response to the lack of representation of queer joy in the media. The short stories are based on real-life experiences and the desires of the author and other queer people around the world that are denied the opportunity to live their authentic lives. They show fictionalized versions of our world, depicting moments uninterrupted by the challenges and blues of the world. The comics are left open-ended to show the possibilities of the moments continuing off-screen, as real life does not have concrete endings, and life just moves on. The purpose of the project is to show the empowering feeling that comes with queer joy.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

In 20 years I see myself working as a freelance illustrator and I have worked on multiple book clover designs, but also creating comics.

Who or what inspires you?

I find inspiration in a lot of places: artists who share their works online, books, music (Alec Benjamin i find often inspires me), TV shows and movies.

How do you approach a new project?

Research and sketches. I write down my ideas and depending on the situation I start researching the topic before or after the sketches.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

Enjoy the first semesters before it becomes stressful and start assignments on time

Have you changed during your studies? How?

I am trying to be more open to letting myself experiment with my art

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

In high school I studies animation and then I realised I didn’t exactly have the patience for it and I enjoyed working with still images better

Stressful submission deadlines

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?
