Unveiling Patterns: Route Setters, Spatial Design, Andthe Art of Bouldering

Sasha Elizabetha Torrealba Pettersson

Over 14 months, I collected data on tension board climbing routes, noting names, difficulties, and move counts. As the project evolved, I found deeper meaning in climbing and explored new ways to express my findings. Drawn to knitting and climbing ropes, I sourced used ropes and created a 560-stitch piece despite limited experience. To complete the project, I digitalized this physical representation, transforming my climbing data into a unique visual format that blended traditional craft with modern data visualization.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

In 20 years, I envision myself  leading a cutting-edge design team, pushing the boundaries of creativity. My network spaning the globe, connecting me with innovative minds and diverse cultures. This journey will have allowed me to play a pivotal role in shaping a more innovative and socially conscious design landscape. Living my passion, inspiring others, and continually evolving in this ever-changing field.

Who or what inspires you?

Authenticity drives my design philosophy and I embrace fear as a catalyst. I create works that challenge or please the eye of the beholder. By staying true to my vision and pushing through fear, I produce designs that resonate deeply and break new ground. This commitment to authenticity and courage fuels my passion and propels my creative journey.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

I remind myself daily that my studies are a personal investment. This mindset keeps me focused and motivated, helping me resist the temptation of procrastination. By viewing my education as a self-driven journey, I take ownership of my learning and push myself to excel.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

My journey in visual communication began early, rooted in my natural affinity for visual learning. Raised in Mexico, I observed a design landscape ripe for enhancement. This awareness, combined with my innate interest, propelled me into the field.
