Mercadona: An All-Age User Friendly Online Grocery Shop

With MERCADONA, Marta Abadia redesigned an online grocery shop to provide accessibility for all users. Creating an understandable, clear navigational system and checkout process, MERCADONA sets out to tackle the difficulties older adults have to overcome when shopping online, ultimately saving customer’s time and providing a personalized shopping experience.

I am a Puerto Rican, Spanish and Japanese graphic designer. When I was younger I moved to different countries, which gave me curiousity about other cultures. I then moved to Berlin when I was 21 to pursue a career in design. Communication Design helped me explore different media and ways of designing, and I could discover that UX/UI was one of my many interests. Without all the previous group projects regarding the topic I would not have been able to tackle a project like this.
My goals are to find ways to help users, and create a clear design for everyone.
What is a good design for you?
Good design is when it is clear and understandable.
What was the most challenging experience during your studies?
The most challenging was every Seminar paper, the Thesis, time management and managing everything together with the expenses of living in Berlin.
Who or what inspires you?
Many things. I don't think there is a limit for me, since I also like other things like photography, fashion, drawing...
I think everywhere I go I observe the environment I am in.
How do you approach a new project?
Definitely moodboards, Pinterest which is the fun part. But of course, research and sticky notes on a Miro board.
What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?
Don't overthink and be too perfectionist like me :) Sometimes it's good to let the design develop. If you really can't stop being perfectionist, then move on to the next task, you can come back to it later; otherwise you will waste time. Don't stress too much about it.
Have you changed during your studies? How?
Yes, my interests have changed quite a lot. I have developed skills I didn't have.
Why did you choose to study in your programme?
I decided to study Communication Design, because I had no idea what exactly I wanted to do in the future. The only thing I knew was that I wished to do something related to design.
How are you going to celebrate your graduation?
I will celebrate with friends and family.
