Trazando Raíces (Tracing Roots)

Natalia Ruiz Galindo Jimenez de la Cuesta

Natalia Ruiz Galindo's project TRAZANDO RAÍCES is a journey of self-discovery to explore, understand, and redefine the stories that have shaped her identity and that of the women in her family. The project aims to preserve and reinterpret these memories. By changing the way these stories are told, she hopes to create a new understanding of her personal story. This work serves as a tribute to the women who have shaped her family's history and as a tool for her own self-discovery.

Natalia Ruiz Galindo Jimenez de la Cuesta

Originally from Mexico and now based in Berlin, Natalia Ruiz Galindo began her journey with a degree in marketing and communications. However, it was in photography that she discovered herself. Natalia's preferred technique is the use of natural light and the analogue process. Her photographs strive to go beyond the simple capture of a visual image and become a story. Natalia aims to create images with a poetic essence that connect with the viewer's emotions. Through her lens, she weaves narratives that are both visually compelling and emotionally resonant.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

Hopefully documenting inspiring stories around the world, spending a lot of time in nature.

What is a good design for you?

One that is simple and authentic.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

Being vulnerable with my art, feeling confident in myself and not taking myself too seriously at the same time.

Who or what inspires you?

Nature, ordinary people, acts of kindness, poetry, films, other artists, my loved ones...

How do you approach a new project?

I just start with an idea and let it transform, I try not to control be flexible and let the idea guide me where it wants to go.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

As Quentin Tarantino said “Make it personal enough so you feel embarrassed to share it.” I think people connect to your art when it comes from a place of vulnerability, when it is personal, so don’t be afraid to show yourself.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

Yes, the biggest thing for me has been to get to a place where I feel confident in myself and where I can stand behind my art without needing the approval from the outside. Although I am still working on it, I feel more confident than before.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

I’ve always loved photography and I wanted to pursue it professionally.

What are you not going to miss in your studies?

Stressing about being stressed.

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

Getting some peace and quiet in nature.
