Protea

Sarah Junger

PROTEA is a demo/prototype to show the combination of visual novel-like cutscenes together with a 3D interactive world for the player to explore. The story starts with the protagonist PROTEA as she arrives in the city to live with her uncle. Upon arrival, she is greeted by her uncle's protégé Cavoli instead, who informs her that her uncle left on a business trip on short notice. While trying to adjust to her new life, she learns more about Cavoli and the people in the city.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

I can't say for sure if that will be the case in the future, but I see myself working either in the game or animation industry in some way or another.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

Probably starting to work on a project with a team enthusiastically at first, but later down the road things go wrong or people get demotivated. Then the project and the group has to be kept together and you really have to focus on delivering a decent end product.

Who or what inspires you?

Many different things like TV shows, anime, comics, and even songs play a part in gathering inspiration for new projects that I have in mind. I also get a boost in creativity when I travel to different countries and visit beautiful sights in those places.

How do you approach a new project?

Depending on what type of project I am dealing with, I first collect notes of what I would want to add in a project. Over the course of working on something, a lot of ideas get scrapped along the way for time management reasons or because they don't align practically with other things. What definitely helps when starting a new project is thinking of an overarching theme that you can always keep in the back of your mind.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

In the beginning everybody starts out on a different level, but don't get discouraged by that! You have your own learning pace and if you put enough determination and passion in, you will acquire these skills regardless. Never compare yourself to others to an extent where you loose motivation.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

Since I was very young, I had a fascination with video games that solidified over the years. Having tried a different study program before I switched to Game Design, I realized that having fun and an interest in studies is far more important to me than studying something other people want you to.

What are you not going to miss in your studies?

Hm, there isn't really anything that I am not going to miss as everything was part of the experience during my studies. What I AM going to miss though are all my fellow classmates!

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

As of now, there is no proper celebration planned but once everything is back to normal one way or another, I might go on a trip to a country that I really wanted to visit.

Say hi!
