Visualisierung von Musik - Eine Interpretation des Songs 7-eleven von Black Midi

Lukas Tietkens

The goal of Lukas Tietkens' project is to create an alternative way of visualizing music and to show the whole piece of music. Visualizing music has to have rhythm in it: The most important thing is to show movement and motion because music is based on rhythm and rhythm is based on motion. The abillities of wet ink, thin color layers, running of the paint on the surface, and the speed of applying the paint, make it an ideal medium for the visualization of motion.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

I will have a big studio and be an accomplished artist. I might become a tattoo artist (I am still practicing).

What is a good design for you?

Lots of contrasts and unconventional composition.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

To take a break from uni for a year and deciding to come back after that and finish my degree.

Who or what inspires you?

I take inspiration from music and music-based projects.

How do you approach a new project?

I start with a lot of sketches and try to figure out what I want to do. After that I most likely have a clue of what I want to do with the design.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

Try everything. Every medium and tool you can find. Then you'll have a better understanding of what you want to do with your art and of the art you want to create.

Have you changed during your studies? How?

I changed a lot. Mostly in the way I draw and paint but also psychologically. I am much more confident in what I do and I know what I want and what I don't want.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

I wanted to improve my drawing skills and my favorite artist is an illustrator (Ralph Steadman).

What are you not going to miss in your studies?

I don't regret it but the academic papers were hard on my patience.

How are you going to celebrate your graduation?

Stay at home and watch Dave Chappelle specials.

Say hi!
