Innovation & Circular Economy: Opportunities for Logistics

Fabian Rott

Logistical processes are the main drivers of our modern globalized economy. The progressive scarcity of resources and the climate issues are pushing for a change in the economy and the industry of logistics. Modern ways to structure and organize supply chains are developed and operated by sustainable logistics management. Innovation plays a crucial role in the restructuring of modern logistics, especially when it comes to finding solutions for a switch from a linear economy to a circular economy. The circular economy is one of the most important discourses of our society, as it involves the smart management of resources and can foster alternative models of consumption and economization. One approach that could largely change the packaging industry and logistic processes is made by a startup that not only presents an option for smart packaging, but also a model that has the potential to enable the circular economy in logistics. The evaluation of this case will be made by considering overall trends affecting logistics. This thesis explores opportunities and hurdles to achieve more sustainable logistics by considering factors of the circular economy and other economy models like the sharing economy. How can a transition to more sustainable logistics be accomplished and what role do cities play in it? There are certain predictions for the future of urban logistics and how new technologies and concepts will dramatically change delivery processes in cities. However, since sustainability can be measured by considering ecologic, economic and social factors, the opposing influences of these factors complicate the process of finding optimized solutions to restructure logistic processes und supply chains.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

Happy and always looking for new challenges that lead to new ideas that have the potential to solve problems of the future.

What is a good design for you?

Good design is simple and seamless. It is characterized by the fact that it solves problems and excels in reacting to user and consumer needs – sometimes even subtly and delicate, without being incredibly noticeable.

What was the most challenging experience during your studies?

One of the biggest challenges for me and my fellow students was working together remote almost exclusively.

Who or what inspires you?

Music, nature and talking to people.

What advice would you give to students who just started studying in your programme?

From constant questioning comes improvement.

Why did you choose to study in your programme?

As I have a background in visual design I wanted to expand this knowledge and put it into a business and strategy context.

Say hi!
